EPC Statement on Racial Justice

June 04, 2020

The Program in Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) stands in solidarity with those engaged in the fight against institutionalized racism, and mourns the unjust deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many other Black people who have lost their lives to racist violence.  In this moment of struggle, we recommit ourselves to research, teaching, activism and learning that deepens our understanding of how systems of oppression operate in society, and rededicate ourselves to the work of addressing injustice that includes environmental racism, Indigenous dispossession, and white privilege.  We pledge to extend EPC’s educational mandate to include offering service to the community, building alliances with our neighbors in the greater Chicago area, and working with grassroots movements in their quests for justice and equality.  We stand with our Black students, faculty, staff, and community members in these painful times, and support the courageous efforts of protestors who demand structural reform and racial justice.
Black. Lives. Matter.

In Solidarity,

The EPC Program
